April saw the rate of growth in demand for IT contractors increase for the first time in 2014. Whilst demand has been growing in the first quarter, the rate of growth had been declining, a trend which reversed in April, according the latest monthly Report on Jobs by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation. The report shows that growth in demand for permanent IT skills fell to 68.5 from 68.8, while for temporary IT resource it increased from 63.7 to 64.0.
The growth continues to be fueled by a demand for expertise coupled with a shortage of capacity, notably for PHP, .Net and Development skills, which are listed in the report as scarce on both a permanent and contract basis. Business Intelligence and SQL contracts and eCommerce and Java positions are also proving hard to fill, says the report.
A second report, from professional services firm Procorre, suggests that UK public sector jobs in IT have begun to recover and now account for 11% of all IT consultancy roles, up from 5% two years ago, though still well below the pre-general election peak of 30%. They said the creation of IT consultancy posts by central and local government since 2012 was partly due to the government’s “digital by default” strategy and they expect more state-sector, temporary IT contracts to be added, as the digital strategy rolls out.
The strategy involves all government information being moved onto one ‘Gov.uk’ website and making a host of existing government services available electronically to the general public.
